This comprehensive guide to 1,074 Huts and Bivouac Boxes in Austria, South Tirol and Germany is an essential handbook for planning mountain tours. For each mountain group it gives a black and white reproduction of a Freytag and Berndt map showing the location of all the Huts and Bivouac Boxes. Full details and a photograph are now given both for the huts belonging to the OeAV, AVS and DAV and, new to this edition, for the huts belonging to other alpine associations (SAC, CAI and other Austrian clubs). The location maps for each hut have also been improved.
The full details given include: hut category; contact details for the guardian; number of beds/Matratzenlager; approach routes; times between huts; selection of peaks with ascent times; public transport possibilities; references to maps and guidebooks.
Briefer details are provided for the private huts. An overview map of all the Eastern Alps is included inside the back cover indicating the mountain groups of the Eastern Alps.
All in all an excellent tool for planning hut tours in the Eastern Alps
Although in German it is easy to follow with the help of an English glossary provided in copies purchased from the AAC(UK) Office. The only drawback to this edition is that it is heavier and no longer pocket sized!
The Alpenverein Members' edition, plus a two page glossary in English for the symbols and abbreviations used, is available from the AAC(UK) Office to members only.
