The Austrian Alpine Club (UK) and the Oesterreichischer Alpenverein

The Austrian Alpine Club (UK) is one of about 200 sections that make up the Oesterreichischer Alpenverein (OeAV), probably best translated as the Austrian Alpine Association. The OeAV was founded in 1862 with the aim of encouraging the growth of mountaineering and to support the life and culture of mountain people.

Today the OeAV has over 300,000 members whose interests encompass all forms of mountaineering sport. Its services include waymarking and maintaining footpaths, building, maintaining and modernising mountain huts, producing maps, guidebooks and magazines, assisting with conservation schemes and scientific research, aiding the now independent rescue service with manpower and equipment, encouraging safety in the mountains, organising tours and courses through its mountaineering school and promoting expeditions. Much of the practical work is done by volunteers who warden a hut at weekends, carry up building materials and bring down rubbish, run a youth group, join a search party or help maintain and waymark footpaths.

The facilities provided can be used by anyone but members obtain important benefits. Everyone is invited to share the fun of mountaineering regardless of age, nationality or ability.

The Austrian Alpine Club (UK)

The AAC (UK) was formed in 1948. Also known as Sektion Britannia is one of the largest mountaineering clubs in the UK with over 6,000 UK and overseas members.

The principal benefits of AAC (UK) membership are:

  • Reduced accommodation costs in alpine huts in most European countries.
  • Annual rescue and repatriation insurance cover with no age limit.
  • Alpenverein maps and books at members' prices.
  • Grants for training courses in the Alps and UK.
  • Quarterly newsletter with news and reviews of Club activities.
  • Meets in the Alps and other European mountain groups.
  • Meets, walks, lectures and social activities in the UK.
  • Opportunities to meet like-minded people and organise member-for-member meets wolrdwide.
  • Bergauf, the OeAV magazine published in German five times a year (by subscription)

The AAC(UK) is run by volunteer committee members and administered from the AAC(UK) Office during office hours, in accordance with our Constitution and Standing Orders.
