Klettersteig

by Louise Grady

Having worked for the Club for 3 years I hear the adventures and epic tales from some of our 6,000 members that call for membership and insurance advice, have enquires concerning mountaineering/ skiing trips around the world and I read of stories from members trips printed in the Newsletter. But now it is my turn, I will be off to Austria to experience Klettersteig, a high adrenaline adventure in the Ramsau with Alpenverein- Bergsteigerschule in June.

Klettersteig was invented in WW1 for soldiers to move safely over the mountains, Vie ferrate translates into ‘Iron Ways’: a good alternative to rock climbing for someone like me, with no rope or belay system. One simply clips into the cables to walk and scramble along the routes. The course will introduce me to techniques on Klettersteigen, how to use the special equipment, basic mountain rescue techniques, first aid, how to read maps and topos, how to plan a Klettersteig tour, all about weather and risks in the mountain. Does this sound interesting to you?

Ready for a Klettersteig?

  • Pop into Cotswold Outdoor with your AAC(UK) membership card and pick up a helmet, gloves, klettersteig lanyard and harness – make sure you show your card and quote af-aacuk-h4 to get the club discount.
  • Fly into Salzburg, enjoy a day at the Mondsee cooling in the lake before heading off early to Postalm to experience the Postalmklamm a 3-4 hour fun and challenging Klettersteig . It is not for the faint hearted but has all the aspects of Klettersteig possible - from rope bridges to overhangs.
  • Now base yourself at Maria Alm - Hochkönig for 3 days. Walk up to the OeAV owned Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte and stay the night before taking on the Persailhorn. This is a great 4 hour climb with fantastic views of the valleys when finished.
  • Then travel up the valley to start your next day at the OeAV Erichhütte, a swift coffee and then a 2 hour hike brings you to the testing Grandlspitz, a perfect 1 hour climb in safe but exposed conditions getting you ready for the next day’s epic.
  • After a peaceful night at the Erichhütte you set off early back to the foot of the Grandlspitz, but now you turn left. Six hours of fantastic, challenging and awesome Klettersteig awaits. You are now on the Königjodler, the best Klettersteig in the region.

For courses please see the Bergsteigerschule section in the Newsletter. In the autumn edition read all about how I get on.

Remember to do your research, buy guide books, ask the locals and be informed. The above is the view and route of one member; it is not endorsed by the AAC (UK) or the OeAV.
