A volunteer is sought to assume complete editorial control of the Club’s quarterly Newsletter from the end of 2011, soliciting content, selecting that which is most appropriate, liaising with our proof-reader and interfacing directly with the graphics designer who takes care of layout. If this challenge is of genuine interest to you, please contact the Club Secretary via the AAC(UK) Office for further details.

Venediger and Glockner Tour September 2007
by Allan Hartley
Martin Haydon’s last words to me on the Swiss meet were, 'l hope you have better weather'. Not a problem say I as my meet did not have the same logistics that Martin faced and I was confident that, should we have bad weather in Austria, I had enough flexibility to move on. How wrong I was! What I did not anticipate was three days of continuous snow which put a metre down after 24 hours at the Badener Hut.
In many ways we got off lightly, abandoning the Badener Hut for Venediger House where we holed up for four days, hoping that it would stop snowing. No such luck, for the snow was creating havoc everywhere, completely covering the Eisee Hut and leaving the Neue Prager Hut without water and electricity for three days.
In Matrei we heard stories of climbers wading waist deep through snow and avalanches galore. The Huttenwirt at the Sankt Poltener Hut declared access impossible for at least a week. Hopes of taking a break by visiting friends in Germany were shortlived as conditions to the north of the Venediger were worse, with snow down to 1200m creating difficult driving conditions.
The weather forecast, while better, didn't predict the glorious sunshine and beau temps needed to shift the snow and salvage something for the Glockner Meet. As it was members tried to make the best of what remained of the holiday. Once in Innsbruck it was clear that we were going nowhere other than home.
I will be doing Glockner Round in 2008 for those who are interested.
