A volunteer is sought to assume complete editorial control of the Club’s quarterly Newsletter from the end of 2011, soliciting content, selecting that which is most appropriate, liaising with our proof-reader and interfacing directly with the graphics designer who takes care of layout. If this challenge is of genuine interest to you, please contact the Club Secretary via the AAC(UK) Office for further details.

Hampered by High Winds
The Easter Week 2007 Meet
by Tish Woulds
As the south of England basked in sunshine the north west of Scotland was plagued by low pressure for the beginning of the Easter Meet. The resultant high winds and poor visibility caused members to use their mountaineering and navigation skills, including wise decisions to turn back. Wind speeds varied according to which hill was climbed and, as often happens, sometimes the tops were not as gusty as the ascents. One group headed east to Ben Wyvis, only to have a very gusty climb with no easing of conditions.
Kinlochewe was a good base for the Meet, as members had various ‘hill needs’, including inevitably ‘the baggers’ but also ‘the toppers’ and others out to enjoy the stupendous scenery and coastal walks. Unfortunately, in spite of being prepared for winter conditions, our gear was not used.
Travelling out and about from the Centre was quick and easy. Both the chalets and hotel were under recent new management and we were made very welcome.
The weather improved greatly for the last two days, giving excellent scrambling conditions and great views. All the ‘giants’ were climbed with two members making the full traverse of Beinn Eighe. There was great mutual support on the hills with experienced Munroists heading off with the ‘baggers’. One member‘s list is down to single figures left to complete. The evening social life was up to standard with those from the bunkhouse visiting the chalets and the traditional glühwein evening was held.
Members left in a good mood, pleased with their achievements. This area deserves to be visited regularly for its amazing beauty, excellent scrambling opportunities and the great interest it inspires in planning and achieving safe ascents and descents.
