The number of entries for 2010 was very similar to that of the previous year, even within the individual categories. Standards were very high in the landscape and nature sections which made judging the very best of these difficult, therefore I had to focus closely on small detail for or against the merits of those entries selected at first. One aspect of this was composition of the scene; selective cropping would have enhanced several entries and boosted their scores. Some landscapes I felt would have benefited from a figure standing in the right hand third to add human interest and scale to the scene, whilst others had intrusive objects in the foreground which could possibly have been avoided. |
Landscape
Winner: of the landscape section was ‘Winter Dolomites’ by Gerry Becker. The three recessive tiers of snow covered slopes with the high mountains beyond sums up the splendour of winter ski touring as represented by the advancing figures.
The Runner-up: ‘Dawn from Mont Blanc du Tacul’ by Simon Cane, again illustrates the joys of being in the high Alps in the early morning. Colour and exposure is spot on.
Highly commended: ‘Alpine Icon’ from Peter Seabourne. Many of us will have taken pictures of the Matterhorn. This one excels with its clarity and the angle of view, with three of its four ridges well recorded.
Nature
This was the most challenging section; so many splendid entries. In some, focussing could have been sharper, which, of course, influenced my decisions.
The Winner: ‘Bouquetin: “Mum, it’s this way”, by Guy Beaumont, a stunning picture of these animals in their natural habitat with what appears to be the Mont Blanc Massif in the background.
Runner-up: is ‘Pomegranate Explosion’ by Daphne Martin, an excellent study of a pomegranate at the peak of fruition. The composition and exposure is just right.
Highly Commended : ‘Copper on Scabious’ by Simon Cane. A sharp and bright close up representing how a natural history photo should be.
People
The standard of this category did not attain that of the previous sections. There were a few with good landscapes but with only a distant speck of a figure to be seen.
The Winner: ‘ Josef looks up’ by Daphne Martin. A good and natural portrait, close up and sharp. The purpose of the well worn rope intrigued me. It appears to be hemp or manilla.
Runner up ‘Icecream with a view’ by Duncan Innes. I like the simplicity of this scene; three people sitting on a balcony enjoying a cooling ice-cream and the view of Pelmo before them.
Commended: ‘Stubai’ by Mike Macken. This collage is a novel way of showing those who attended the “A” team in the Stubaital in 2010. A bit of digital wizardry.
Typical Austria
Winner of this category is ‘Bremer Hütte and Habicht’ by Martin Ross, a well-spotted opportunity. High mountain tarns are seldom as calm as this one. The reflections are perfect, the composition and lighting just right.
The Runner-up: ‘Heiligenblut Church’ by Philip Nixon, with the church standing alone in a dominant position pointing to a cloudless sky, its sharp clean outline a credit to the style of alpine churches.
Commended: ‘Silbertal Village’ by Peter Seabourne. An immaculate alpine pasture dotted with neat chalets linked by a winding path to the highest building.
Sketch
There were only three entries in this category, which removed the competitive element from decision making.
Winner : ‘Tense Moment’ by Daphne Martin. The physical postures of the group in a tricky situation is realistic, the colours are vibrant and bright, but the figure on the left is further away than the group on the right and is therefore out of proportion.
Runner up: ‘Castle Rock’ by Jean Scholes. The tree-clad “tooth” which is part of the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’, is well represented in its isolation from the higher surrounding fells.
First Time Entrants
Winner: ‘Alpine Icon’ by Peter Seaborne. In addition to my earlier comments on this entry in the Landscape category, the scene is one I am very familiar with as I have climbed the mountain several times, but my decision rested with the quality of the image. It is a head-turner for anyone.
Runner-up : ‘Grünausee’ by Neil Dowling, another excellent mountain scene with good reflections in the lake. The only weakness is in the figure walking out of the edge of the picture rather than facing into it, but it is well-exposed and a good image.
Highly Commended: ‘Bremer Hütte and Habicht’ by Martin Ross, where my previous comments apply.
Commended: ‘Silbertal Village’ by Peter Seaborne, where my earlier comments apply.
Overall Winner
Bouquetin: “Mum, it’s this way”, by Guy Beaumont. My earlier comments apply.
