A volunteer is sought to assume complete editorial control of the Club’s quarterly Newsletter from the end of 2011, soliciting content, selecting that which is most appropriate, liaising with our proof-reader and interfacing directly with the graphics designer who takes care of layout. If this challenge is of genuine interest to you, please contact the Club Secretary via the AAC(UK) Office for further details.

Jean King writes ...
In my innocence, I thought judging the AAC photographic competition would be a relatively straightforward task! Believe me, it has been most difficult. The images cover a vast range of countries, terrain and species, and the photographic standard on the whole is impressive, making selection a real challenge. Congratulations to all the award winners and to all who entered to make this a well contested competition.
The winning entry in the Landscape section, John Parish's 'Glacier View', appealed to me immediately as a sharp, well composed view, conveying all the elements of a great day in the mountains. The curving lake shore, the file of people and the glacier tongue lead the eye effortlessly through to the elevated peak in the picture.
There were such contrasting images in the Nature section, making selection difficult, but 'Pulsatilla alpina, Alpine anemones' by Malcolm Imhoff placed these lovely flowers so clearly in their mountain habitat, that I chose this image for both the Nature category, and as the overall competition winner.
Peter Fleming with his picture, 'Pilgrim with prayer wheel, Lhasa', was my choice for winner of the People section. This delightful study of a woman interrupting her devotions to sup from a bowl of hot tea is timeless, and despite the little glance at the photographer, she appears to be undisturbed by the passers-by.
The topic 'Typical Austria' had fewer entries than other categories. My choice of 'Salzburg' by Stephen Lee captures for me all the warm atmosphere of a late summer evening along the banks of the River Salzach.
It is pleasing to see so many submissions from First Time Entrants, presenting again a challenge. My choice of Gerry Becker's entry, 'Ski mountaineers ascending Simony Spitzen' has lovely depth, human interest, and atmosphere.
I speculate that were the competition to continue growing in popularity, it may warrant a panel of judges in future.
