A volunteer is sought to assume complete editorial control of the Club’s quarterly Newsletter from the end of 2011, soliciting content, selecting that which is most appropriate, liaising with our proof-reader and interfacing directly with the graphics designer who takes care of layout. If this challenge is of genuine interest to you, please contact the Club Secretary via the AAC(UK) Office for further details.

Michael Cawley writes ...

It was a real privilege to judge this year’s competition. There were some excellent photographs which meant choosing winners was a tough, but enjoyable, challenge!

The landscape section contained some really top class images, with Jean King’s Le Lac Banc photograph coming first. The panoramic view combined with the reflection of the landscape on the mirror-like surface and with the contrasting light gave the photo many different focal points which I really liked. Robert Scutt’s photograph ‘Ledge’ made me feel like I could actually be standing there and brought back memories of my own travels.

Pam Hamer‘s ‘Glacier walking Spitzbergen’ gave a real impression of the wide expanse of the mountain wilderness that is enjoyed by so many people. The camel trains of people moving up the surface reinforces the size of glacier.

Jean King again topped the Nature category with her photograph of the Chamois. The background gives the animal a real sense of looking over his unspoilt kingdom. Dahnie Martin’sphoto ‘Squirrel’ caught the characteristics of a squirrel perfectly. He looks as if he has just been caught stealing the bird seed.

The typical Austrian photo section had fewer entries, but all were interesting and professional. Pam Hamer picked up her second winning entry with ‘Mountain chapel on the Fieberbrunnerweg’ the small clean foreground made the chapel look very isolated and tranquil.

Congratulations to all of the winners and I hope that next year’s judges have as much fun as I did!

Technical Note: the actual judged entries are of high resolution. The versions shown here have been necessarily limited to a width of either 240 or 500 pixels to fit the web page.
